There's no getting around that it's an SUV, that it rides taller, that it weighs a fair amount as well. And when it comes to handling, it does that job pretty well too. There's no arguments about how fast this car could be in a straight line. And that will get this M40i model to 60 miles an hour, according to BMW, in just over 4 and a half seconds. And speaking of crazy performance things that you don't expect in this kind of vehicle, we've got launch control. If I dial it into one of the various sport modes, it even gets a little louder and it will crackle the be exhaust when I make downshifts. The throttle response is pretty solid for a turbocharged engine, especially one with an 8 speed transmission. There's good detents in the rim that make you want to grab the wheel at the right position. The nicely weighted and easy to grab onto steering wheel feels good in your hands. So it's a very satisfactory driving experience. This one revs all the way to 6500 RPM and sounds good in the process. BMW's never had a problem making powerful engines that feel good. So acceleration in this is not a problem. And this M40i has a turbocharged straight 6 with 355 horsepower and about 365 pound feet of torque. The xDrive30i comes with a two liter turbocharged 4 cylinder, about 250 horsepower, or so. Of the two, this is the M40i, which is the top version. You get the same powerful 6 cylinder engine and this model, which is the M40i. But I've since reviewed that vehicle and driving this car for the first time, and the similarities are very easy to spot. And I'm actually happy to get to talk about that because I went to Portugal to drive the X3 and film a video on it, and I got the flu immediately after landing. From the driver's seat, unsurprisingly, the X4 drives similarly to the X3. We're gonna drive it for the first time today. It's a slightly more premium, slightly more sporty variant of the X3 that has a slope down roof. CARLOS LAGO: That right there is the new 2019 BMW X4. It sits squarely in the middle but was exactly what I was looking for. The X4 does not try to be the perfect sedan or perfect SUV. It's very cool (and you can choose any of your playlists and songs via the main 10" screen or even through the Head Up Display. You stream from the car, not from your phone. The absolute coolest feature is Spotify built into the car. A teenager in my neighborhood said, "That looks cool!" Look at the new Tesla Model Y, it has a similar roof line.įor those who complain about lack of Android Auto, that's coming this summer and yes it has Apple CarPlay. I love the design and it's become more and more common. The biggest knock against the X4 is the 'coupe' like design and how it reduces headroom in the rear seats and storage. Watch any of the Video reviews and they all praise the driving characteristics and technology in the car. The tech in the car is fantastic and works very well. With the M40i engine, it's ridiculously fast and can corner much better than you'd expect. And it handles 10 times better … than any SUV you've driven. No, it doesn't drive like a pure sedan, but it's closer to a sedan than anything with 8" of ground clearance. This 'SAV' sports activity vehicle is phenomenal to drive (M40i engine) with excellent handling and close to sedan like feel. I was looking for a mid-sized vehicle that drives more like a car with 'some' of the practicality and utility of an SUV. 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system (M40i).Synthetic leather dashboard (xDrive30i).Front cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is about to cross the X4's path while you're moving forward). Lane keeping system (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane).Adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the X4 and the car in front).Automated parking system (steers into a parking spot with little or no driver intervention).Surround-view camera (gives you a top-down view of the X4 and its surroundings for tight parking situations).Front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.Adaptive suspension (can automatically adjust to improve ride quality and handling stability).
